Common Knowledge on Alerasis: Life is simple on Alerasis. Alerasis is primarily one big desert called Mystamor…meaning place of many roads. Odd things often happen in the desert around water so most people do not stay around water for any longer than they have to. The desert contains hundreds of nomadic tribes of various races (standard+ Naree). Most people live by the rule “survival of the fittest” however old people are still held up as “wise elders & so are shown a certain amount of respect as a result. The history of Alerasis is completely unknown except for story accounts passed on by word of mouth by tribal elders to their youth; such stories vary from tribe to tribe somewhat, but are basically the same. Literacy is rare & people that can read &/or write are often mistrusted by all but close friends & family. The Naree have their own language called Nareene. The Naree are thought to all be thieves, beggars & liars & shiftless “laz-abouts”. The only honorable Naree are the legionnaires in the Westwind Mountains’ city of Silverforge & though not many trust them fully even there. The only city in all of Alerasis is Silverforge. No one knows who built the city; only that it seems to have always been there. The Westwind Mountains are riddled with caves, old mines, & sand pits (Sand pits which are believed by most to be the roads to Allsmoth meaning place of our ancestors; a virtual hell where the “Gods of Old” still live). The Gods of Old were savage & powerful & feared by most; rarely worshiped. Those who worship the old gods are feared & mistrusted & believed to be foolish & dangerous fanatics; nothing more. It is unwise to wander the desert alone. Strangers cannot be trusted. Vast Water is by all accounts the largest body of water on Alerasis is believd to be a myth; there is no ocean to the Far East. No one has ever come back from the Far East. Far East is any where east of the Great Rift. The Great Rift is considered a holy site among the Naree. The Great Rift is bottomless according to some tales. The steam rising up from the Great Rift is the Breath of Life, left over from the time of creation & can be seen for days before reaching the rift. The rift is holy to the Naree. The Naree holy place is a forbidden place to outsiders i.e.… non-Naree. The holy site is forbidden by the Naree but not by tribal law; hence non-Naree take their chances going there & can expect no help to come their aid should they be found to be too near the site. There is a 1 mile buffer zone near the site; those found outside this area, but near it are warned away before they get too close to the zone. No one knows what happens to those found inside this zone nor do people know of anyone who has been there & returned although countless people know of people who were turned away from the surrounding area. This is the only known area of permanent Naree tribes. Naree tribes tend to form & disband seemingly without cause. The Naree are the only ones who don’t think of this behavior as odd. There aren’t very Naree left in the world;, some say they are a dying race. No one knows where the Naree came from, not even the Naree. Legends speak of a time when the Naree arrived in the desert, but from where they came is open to wild debate. It is known that they lived during the time of the old gods. The common language is trade speak & has no alphabet. Dragons lived during the time of the old gods; they are savage unreasoning beasts many people say. The only good dragon is a dead dragon!!! Dragon Armor commands respect from all but the Naree. Undead are the product of the Gods of Old & proof that they are fearsome in deed. Undead are the remains of dead wanders that had offended the old gods in life & are condemned to wander the world until someone puts them out of their misery. Vampires are the most common form of undead. Desert & mountain druids are revered & respected as forces of nature; they are believed to be extensions of the world itself made flesh & are usually warmly welcomed wherever they go. A man’s worth on Alerasis is measured by his accomplishments, determination & hard work; not by his dreams of great victories. Come adventure here & live in simpler times where courage is tested & great efforts are rewarded. The common language is trade speak & has no alphabet. The Naree are a race that proven that if you don’t use it you lose it. They found life on Alerasis so easy they became lazy & seldom used their full abilities to etch out a life for themselves among the population of the Mystmor Desert & so after thousands of years among the “filthy heathens” they lost almost all of their race’s former glory to sloth; this a race that gave that once battled devils on their own home grounds; now known to history only as thieves, beggars & liars. Not that all their kind are the same; some, not many, live by honor choosing to join the “Legion of the Damned” a legionnaires band that has chosen to defend the growing groups of Naree & heathens that have gone to the mountains of Westwind to live in the city of Silver Forge the only true city in all of Alerasis. Once the Home of the Naree; it has become a symbol of what can be accomplished through hard work & resourcefulness & a warning of the dangers of sloth. The Naree that live there seek to gain back the honor they once had & some suspect them of more than they let on. (Not common knowledge except among the Naree is that the Naree can read & write their native tongue & not just speak it). The Naree speak Nareene. The Naree are bipedal bug people. Their skin color changes to fit its environment; with the exception being members of the High Order. The High Order or council of leadership is very old; some Naree believe they have lived since the time of the heathen gods; they are easily recognized by their black chitin. The Naree do not eat; all that is necessary for survival is water, but a Naree must consume 1 liter of water a day to avoid weakening & finally dying of starvation. The Naree gain nutrients from the minerals found in the waters of Alerasis. The Naree are quick, tough & perceptive; with long racial memories. Racial memories are passed from one generation to the next in a seemingly endless succession of generations. The Naree are genderless in appearance. Each Naree is destined to be the mother/father of the next generation. A Naree have only one child ever before dying. The Naree child; known as a nymph is an exact duplicate of its parent including any injuries or scars the parent may have had before death. Most Naree live near or around the Great Rift; a holy site that they guard jealously from non-Naree. Few Naree live as nomads roaming the world, but it is not unheard of. Druids are the leading example of nomads among the Naree.
